Does anyone know of any organisations that accept knitted items? I've been googling, and have found a few that accept knitted things to sell to raise money, but I love the idea of working on something, making it lovely and knowing that it will be used and appreciated by someone who really needs it. I seem to remember someone from the old board who used to knit blankets and things to send away, but I can't remember the name of the charity. Can anyone think what it was?

Thanks!

The old member was Fiona, I think, who knitted for Romenian orphans.

You could call your local chapter of the Red Cross or Oxfam to ask if they know of any charities, or perhaps a hospital or shelter for homeless/battered wives/others in need. Religious institutions might know of people in need, too. Some animal shelters will accept washable blankets and toys.

There is an article on this in the September issue of Knit Today.

One idea is making clothes for premature babies, but also to go in memory boxes for people who lose their babies - michaelsgift@ymail.com (no website given).

There's a charity looking for blankets for families in the Balkans - http://www.hopeandaiddirect.org.uk. They also want knitted clowns for children in the same area.

In the supplement of things to knit for charity, they suggest contacting your nearest homeless shelter to see if they need specific garments knitted, and also animal shelters to see if they need animal blankets.

Most organisations seem to want items to sell, though. I was rather taken by the idea of knitting an alpaca for Animal Assisted Therapy (http://www.alpacamaraca.com), but again, that's for them to sell. I love alpacas though :D

I hope you find something!

It might have been Nadia, who's one of my knitting friends (thanks to the 'old' site as I met her through there and discovered she only lives about 10 miles away from me). I also knit for the charity she supports, as do other members of our local knitting groups. We make things for Romanian orphans and street kids, so it's not just baby knits :) I don't know the name of the charity I'm afraid as I pass things on to Nadia and then she sends off a box to another lady every year.

Yes, it was Nadia! You're brilliant, I knew it was a name ending in -ia, thank you.

I've found this site that has 'challenges' for specific knitted and crocheted items to be donated to various charities:

debster posted a request a few weeks ago for shawls for use in her A&E dept charities/topic10077.html it may not appeal to everyone but it sounded a worthy cause to me.

And I mentioned hats, balaclavas and gloves for the Seafarers:

Plenty of centres to hand them in at or we are collecting them at Poppy's (www.craftypoppycanknit.com) and I will make sure they get to the right person.

So many good charities out there that you will be spoilt for choice
