There are two patterns i've recently tried, a heart and a rose. Both say to felt, i've never felted before so i was wondering what's the best way to felt?

have you used yarn with a very high percentage of wool that says hand wash only on the label? this is a must for felting otherwise it won't work but beyond that it is great great fun and very easy.
simply hurl your project into the washing machine along with a something to bash it around a bit like an old pair of jeans or bath towel and run it through the cycle. with a small project like a heart or a rose i'd be temped just to add it to my regular washing(make sure the colours won't run though unless you want pink knickers)
if your yarn is 100% wool a 40degree regular wash will do the trick, the higher the percentage of any other fibre will mean you need to increase the temp. my advice would be to start at a lower temp and rewash/felt if necessary. wheni tcomes out of the machine you might have to do abit of reshaping by pulling and manipulating it back into the shape you wanted but that's part of the fun.
here are my felted clogs and if you scroll down to second page it gives how i did it.
i think the trick is to be brave and just have a go you'll quickly get hooked!
good luck and enjoy, and don't forget to post piccies when you are done.

Yes, I agree with all Joy says. What I also do is put the items to be felted into an old pillow case & tie a knot in the top. Stops little things getting lost and stops big things filling my washer with lint. :D
