Cotton can knit up differently to wool, especially pure cotton which can be a bit stiffer & doesn't have the same drape as wool, also I don't know if you'll be able to get a fine enough cotton yarn to sub for that pattern

Even calculating the length doesn't always work when subbing yarn as some knits up different I've found

Have you tried working some oil into his coat & putting a bit on his food? You can use something like cod liver oil on his food, but not too much or it could give him the runs, or you can use pure coconut oil on both his coat & a little in his food, but make sure that it's completely unproce...

Even using yarn with nylon in I find that eventually the heels start to go into holes, so then I darn them, but a friend of mine always darns her husbands socks straight after she's knitted them to strengthen them.

This is a bit of an odd one as usually they write the instructions out for you, but can you not work the instructions from left to right, only trouble is if there all on the knit side you would have to work them our so that you could purl them back. Firstly don't presume that a wool yarn will necessarily be itchy, some are lovely & soft.

Buying yarn on a cone from places like Yeoman Yarns, Texere, Silver Viscount & BSK to name a few
