Understanding Lace Charts

Postby ChanBec » Tue Sep 25, 2012 8:33 pm

I'm just starting to try lace knitting and have hit rather a big stumbling block in understanding lace charts.

I'm looking at charts and I just don't get how decreases like K2Tog can only take 1 stitch on a chart?

For example, I'm reading a chart which says it has a 6 stitch repeat:
K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, K1

Surely I already need 8 stitches on my needles to do that pattern? Or am I meant to do the YO and K2tog at the same time? But then I've seen charts which don't have these two right next to each other.

So I'm completely confused and any help would be much appreciated!

It is confusing, and I hope this will make sense:

you need 6 stitches to do the repeat: 2 to do a K2tog, 1 to do a K1, 2 to do a SSK, and 1 to do the K1. The yo's are added to that while you're knitting that row.

So your next row will be 6 stitches, too: 1 (the k2tog from the previous row), 1 (yo from previous row), 1 (k1), 1 (yo), 1 (ssk) and 1 (k1) = 6.

Does this make sense? You can place markers between the repeats to make it easier to keep track, and use a lifeline if it all feels a bit uncomfortable, so you can always frog/rip it out again.

There are some more tips and tricks on how to do lace in our sticky, maybe there's some helpful info there too:

I get it now - thank you so much! It was completely confusing me as I was adding a stitch to do the yarn over!

It's all making sense now :D

THANK YOU!!!
