What is your best discovery/gadget/tool in knitting?

Ball winders? Stitch Counters? Strange contraptions that look alien but allow you to knit four times as fast? Tell us about them all here.

What is your best discovery/gadget/tool in knitting?

Postby Tricotine » Sat Oct 23, 2010 3:40 pm

A couple of years ago, I bought this set of DPN and I just love using them and appreciate the fact that they are always tidy and ready in a case.

Are there any tools or gadgets you really like using?

I moved this thread to gadgets because I think it is the appropriate location for this question.

I use things like paperclips and little curtain hooks as cable needles, and I have filled a spectacles box with all the little bits that would otherwise get lost at the bottom of the project bag: stitch markers, tape measure, the above paperclips, tapestry needles, little scissors, scrap yarn... Very handy and tidy for someone as messy as me.

Tobacco tins!

I used one as my notions box, I could get:
darning needles
stitch markers
measuring tape
folding scissors or thread snips
cable needles

all in a little tin that kept them all to hand.

Alas, my stitch marker collection has outgrown the humble baccy tin and now has its own beautiful cedar box :)

Never meant as a knitting tool, but I discovered it by accident and it works great for stitch markers: I don't know if you have the brand Oral-B in the UK? The spare toothbrushes come with little plastic rings in different colours, meant to designate the brushes to different family members. They're smooth, so don't catch on yarn, and so brightly coloured you always spot them right away.

I have arthritis in my hands and fingers. and although I do use and have a large collection of the regular kneedles, I have recently been acquiring knitting looms. so much easier and work progresses quickly for me, but there limited in what I can make with them. I'm still learning
Took bags of wool to charity shops, Now I only have what I'm using. :)

I bought a tally counter, as used by night-club bouncers (so I'm told - I don't do night clubbing myself!), and it's great as a row counter. I bought mine from a Pound Shop: in fact, they're so cheap I have one on a ribbon which I wear round my neck, and another fastened to my knitting bag so I don't lose it.
