Fish and Chip Babies

Postby Raych » Wed May 09, 2012 8:02 am

Hi everybody,
I was wondering if anybody knits or hs heard of the fish and chip babies. My MIL is trying to get hold of the pattern, but she doesn't know where from??
For those that havn't heard of it, its where people knit cacoons to bring babies home from hospital, for people in another country (i think africa way) because they currently bring their newborns home in newspaper, hence the name fish and chip babies.
Thanks

Funnily enough this is the second time I've heard of this in the last couple of weeks - not sure if someone else posted on here or if I heard at knitting group. Anyways, digging around google brought up plenty of links, and here is one that has the pattern :

I have heard of housework, but I definitely don't like the sound of it

What a lovely idea, Cheryl, and what a lovely way to use our hobby
Still not sure what I want to be when I grow up

‘ Fish and Chip’ babies need you
These are called fish and Chip babies because they are often sent home from hospital wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm
In order to assist these tiny babies we are asking you to knit a small jumper to keep these babies warm. Average knitters can complete a jumper in an evening.
Special Instructions
Only use Double knitting wool
No baby colours. Pastel colours are not practical as these garments may never be washed
Bright and mixed colours are best or a mixture of stripes
Materials
Double knitting wool
Size 6 (5mm) needles for tight knitters
Size 7 ($.5mm) needles for loose knitters
Made all in one piece
Cast on 44 stitches
Work 18 rows in K2 P2 rib
Work 30 rows in stocking stitch (1 row knit 1 row purl)
Cast on 12 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows
Change to K2 P2 rib (this makes the sleeves)
Rib 22 more rows
For the neck
Rib 21 Cast off 26 rib 21

Work 22 rows in k2 p2 rib

Hello baeswoman welcome to the forum. Thankyou for posting the pattern for the fish and chips baby pattern. Are you a part of the coordinating group for this charity or was it just something that caught your eye. Do you have a link to a direct website for the charity so we can see where to post etc. It is already something that several of our members are involved with.

I just looked this up as was curious and the singlets are gorgeous.

Says they are called Fish and Chip Babies as babies born in the poorest areas of Africa are wrapped in newspaper (hence Fish & Chip Babies) as their mothers often have no clothes for them.
