I have just finished a hat and mittens for my GD. I washed them using woollite and the hat now fits me! GD is 16mths old. I used Patons Fairytale Dreamtime, it was yarn recommended. The pattern was in Lets Knit. Anyone else used this, Any problems? I am feeling very despondent about knitting now. I feel useless and that it's been a complete waste of time. Am thinking no point in doing anything else. Have also signed up for dishcloth swap and worried about that in case it turns out to be a disaster as well. Sorry to moan, had a bad day as well. Did you do a tension square before knitting?

Oh, Annj, so sorry that the hat and mitts got disorted in the wash. I am positive that it is not your knitting but the wool , which was the problem. You made beautiful things before, so, do not be dishearted! I guarantee your dishcloth will be fine.
I would make the mitts again with different wool and pattern to feel confident again.

Thanx both of you for replies.
Traxia I did do tension square. The hat seemed to stretch in the water. I didn't pin it out after just laid it flat to dry. I have more of this yarn as was going to make a cardigan for her, but don't know now.
Tricotine I will try what you suggested before I give up completely. Annejx

Do another one, don't wash it and you have matching hats :D

Could you felt it?
