Christmas ideas 2009

Have you got any great patterns for Christmas presents? Quick Mother's Day gifts or birthday treats? Or are you looking for inspiration?

Christmas ideas 2009

Postby chris23005 » Tue Jul 21, 2009 9:18 pm

I know that there is another thread about gifts as well, but can we share ideas about knitting for Christmas presents?
I really don't want to knit yet another scarf and as you know I am not a sock lover although I wish I was because I think they make great presents.

Currently the only idea I have are hats made from sock yarn and decorated with knitted flowers etc.

I am needing small inexpensive items this year as because of the house move and me being out of work Christmas is going to be quite frugal! :(

anyone else got any brainwaves?

I'm knitting a nativity for mum, sis and driving instructor (ok and one for me). If you have a large dk oddment stash then they might use them up with the odd ball of cheap dk for the face.

My blue swallowtail shawl was acrylic 4ply. Well appreciated and oohed and aahed over - for 99p!!

If you can cable the brea bag and viking bag are both quite straightforward. (both are on Rav)

I haven't even thought about it yet - but will ask DD and GS next week if there's anything they'd like.

I knitted a big Alan Dart nativity set last year so don't want to repeat it just yet!

the shawl sounds nice though and the bags. Forgot about bags. I knitted my daughter a bag from Noro Silk Mountain last year and all the men got aran hats, but there are a few others I could knit a bag for ...... hmmmmmmmm!

Sorry double post.

Was the blue swallowtail shawl your own pattern or can it be found somewhere?

Good idea for a thread, I think I'll be making some bags.
Last year I produced two phone socks (yes, phones need socks too) a hat, a scarf and a hot water bottle cover. Very cheap and much appreciated pressies (although I did leave it til the last minute, and was up until 2am on Christmas morning finishing off. All the people I was knitting for arrived 3 days before Christmas, so I had to knit tactically and swap items whenever they left the room. Will have to be more organised this year!)

I plan on doing the pattern in Lets Knit this month, the Manos Silk blend handbag which is basically a garter stitch rectangle!! £13 per bag roughly including handles, a bit more if you line them and they can't take more than a few hours to knit up!
My bro is getting scarf/fingerless gloves/hat combo and my parents will be getting socks to wear on their narrow boat (I plan to get an indy dyer to dye yarn to the colours of their boat!) and I've not decided what to do the kids...felted clogs maybe??

Wow! ;) Your Viking Bag is beautiful. I wasn't going to make a bag at all but after seeing your one, I have to make it. :D

fingerless gloves knit up quite quickly & you could do a matching flower brooch for a bit of extra wow factor
