Fish and Chip Babies

Postby Raych » Wed May 09, 2012 8:02 am

Hi everybody,
I was wondering if anybody knits or hs heard of the fish and chip babies. My MIL is trying to get hold of the pattern, but she doesn't know where from??
For those that havn't heard of it, its where people knit cacoons to bring babies home from hospital, for people in another country (i think africa way) because they currently bring their newborns home in newspaper, hence the name fish and chip babies.

Funnily enough this is the second time I've heard of this in the last couple of weeks - not sure if someone else posted on here or if I heard at knitting group. Anyways, digging around google brought up plenty of links, and here is one that has the pattern :
I have heard of housework, but I definitely don't like the sound of it

Still not sure what I want to be when I grow up

‘ Fish and Chip’ babies need you
These are called fish and Chip babies because they are often sent home from hospital wrapped in newspaper to keep them warm

Hello baeswoman welcome to the forum. Thankyou for posting the pattern for the fish and chips baby pattern. Are you a part of the coordinating group for this charity or was it just something that caught your eye. Do you have a link to a direct website for the charity so we can see where to post etc. It is already something that several of our members are involved with.

I just looked this up as was curious and the singlets are gorgeous.

Says they are called Fish and Chip Babies as babies born in the poorest areas of Africa are wrapped in newspaper (hence Fish & Chip Babies) as their mothers often have no clothes for them.
